Gary Deal - Local Area Hall Of Fame

Gary Deal

Mr. Deal graduated from Culpeper High School in 1975.  He was an athlete that played tennis.  As a young man he spent much of his time and effort learning and perfecting the game of tennis on Culpeper’s 2 public courts behind Floyd T. Binns School. He is known for being the best player in Culpeper in the 1980’s, especially for the years 1980-1987. He also received his professional license as a Tennis Teaching Pro in 1983.  In recent years, Gary has consistently volunteered his time to teach and coach kids in the community both in tennis and basketball. He has been coaching tennis since 1983. For the past 10 years, he has volunteered and coordinated free tennis and basketball clinics for kids and adults through Culpeper Parks and Recreation. Gary worked hard to plan and organize so all kids can learn and improve their skills. He has used tennis and basketball as options for kids to find that love for something in their life they can always work on to improve themselves and build self-confidence. He has coordinated volunteers, generated lesson plans and schedules, and facilitated all sessions on the courts. He worked with his volunteers as they introduced many kids to the games of tennis and basketball.  Gary’s success in playing tennis is impressive. He won about 50 regional tournaments during the 80’s in Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
